Possibility of a Pregnant Pet Rat?
Not too long ago I bought two young and (presumably) female rats, Thelma and Louise. I was out of town for a week, left them in a friend’s care and returned to find that Louise is actually a Luis. Of course, the two rats are perfectly fine and separated for the time being.
I’ve owned (female) rats my entire life and never had this problem before. My question is this; could Luis have impregnated Thelma before or during testicular descent and scrotal development? Should I be preparing myself for a delivery of baby rats?
It’s possible. Rats are able to reproduce as young as 5 weeks of age. If Thelma has become pregnant, you’ll know very soon. As you probably know, rat gestation is only 3 weeks & the doe’s belly usually increases in girth during the 3rd week. With our own surprise litter, our mama rat’s belly didn’t get bigger until just a few days before the pups were born.
If Thelma does have babies, you may want to keep 1 or more of each sex so both Thelma & Luis can have companions. If it turns out that she isn’t pregnant, you might consider having Luis neutered so they can be reunited.
Good luck either way.

He could have, it only takes a matter of seconds for them to mate enough for females to be pregnant.
I dont think you should worry about it unless you see her start to bloat or any other sort of sign for pregnancy.
But be prepared just in case. Better safe then sorry :]
Good luck with your, maybe, rattie-mama and little pinkies!
I agree with the person who answered before me, if they do have babies, keep some for company!
And if not getting your male neutered would make them able to be pals again :]
